North Sea finalists: Powerful impacts
We are very proud of our three finalists and what they have achieved to make the North Sea Region (and the world beyond) a better place. Here is a rundown of the main reasons why you might consider voting for them.
JOMOPANS: Safeguarding marine life from underwater noise
Underwater sound is crucial for marine animals, but noise from economic activities like offshore wind farms and shipping threatens their survival.
Jomopans combined at-sea measurements with advanced modeling to create the first comprehensive soundscape of the North Sea, one of the busiest seas in the world. This groundbreaking work is shaping regional policies across the EU, informing EU-wide strategies, and motivating industries to take action against underwater noise pollution. By revealing the true impact of human activities beneath the waves, Jomopans is paving the way for more effective marine conservation.

BITS: 33 ways to boost cycling
Increased cycling is a key priority in Europe, as underlined by the EU Declaration on Cycling, adopted on 13 April 2024. Cycling contributes to cleaner air, reduced emissions, better public health, and a strong European cycling industry providing 1 million jobs.
BITS spearheaded Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to make cycling a better experience and help citizens cycle more. Through 33 pilots, the project explored smart systems that make cycling safer, faster, and more convenient. From intelligent lighting to 3D cameras, the project offered proof points for the huge potential of smart cycling. BITS also helped cyclists to engage in digital participation, e.g. through smart 'sniffer bikes' collecting data on air pollution.

TOPSOIL: Securing our ground water
As climate change intensifies, understanding and managing our underground water resources has become crucial. TOPSOIL has tackled this challenge by pioneering innovative geophysical methods to safeguard soil and groundwater.
Through 16 local pilot projects, the initiative developed 44 solutions, making water management more resilient across the North Sea Region. From advanced mapping technologies to smarter agricultural practices, TOPSOIL has improved water quality, reduced nitrate pollution, and enhanced flood management. These efforts not only protect vital resources but also support farmers, policymakers, and communities in adapting to a changing climate.
