The BIOBEST project was presented in the POPUP Talk of CLOSECYCLE in September. The BIOBEST project develops guidelines and policy briefs to improve the biowaste collection and processing.

BIOBEST is an EU-funded (Life) project to support upper-level authorities and decision makers in streamlining policy measures and lower-level authorities in implementing solutions for recycling organic waste. LIFE BIOBEST released in July 2024, four bio-waste management guidelines. Together, these guidelines offer a strategic vision and practical approaches crucial for effective bio-waste management. And for optimising the implementation of the EU obligation with evidence from high-performing schemes and with the definition of performance indicators. Steffen Walk, representing ECN, and Mike Stivenage and Gemma Nohales of ENT (projectleaders of BIOBEST), presented the following subjects:

  • Policy and regulatory barriers: identifying and analyzing policy and regulatory barriers for the production of high-quality compost and digestate from bio-waste;
  • Guideline on governance and economic incentives: governance tools and economic instruments needed to improve bio-waste management schemes;
  • Guideline on quality compost and digestate: processing options, analysis of product characteristics, quality assurance and best practices of treatment;
  • Proposal for EU standards for bio-waste entering recycling processes resulting in high-quality compost and digestate.
