ISL

We are proud to partner with the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), a key driver of innovation in maritime logistics and hydrogen-based technologies. ISL plays a pivotal role within our consortium, focusing on the management of hydrogen-based energy carriers and the seamless integration of these technologies into port operations.

ISL's contribution spans a range of cutting-edge initiatives — from the design of innovative vessels with alternative propulsion systems to the development of hydrogen bunker infrastructure. Their expertise is crucial in reshaping port operations for a more sustainable future, where hydrogen plays a central role.

With over a decade of experience in hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) applications, ISL has built a solid foundation in maritime hydrogen strategies. Since 2012, when it joined the EU FP7 project H2OCEAN — focused on hydrogen generation from offshore wind and wave power — ISL’s hydrogen group has taken part in numerous projects addressing hydrogen trucks, PtX supply chains, and hydrogen use in ports. Notably, the institute conducted holistic studies on the role of the maritime sector in Germany’s hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen infrastructure for the Ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven.

As part of this project, ISL contributes to the development of Port H2 Valley Master Plans, focusing on the hydrogen and PtX strategies for the Bremen scenario, identifying regional synergies, and transferring results to other North Sea ports. ISL also leads efforts in value chain analysis, bunkering strategies, and stakeholder integration — ensuring that practical, port-centric solutions are developed and scaled.

About ISL

The Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) stands at the intersection of tradition and innovation. With deep roots in the maritime world and a commitment to science-driven development, ISL supports the transition to a cleaner and more resilient logistics sector.

Through its collaborative approach and strong international network, ISL contributes to shaping the future of global logistics — with hydrogen as a cornerstone for change. Whether it’s through technological integration, port transformation, or smart logistics systems, ISL is helping pave the way toward a more sustainable maritime economy.
