Free Hanseatic City of Bremen
We are proud to collaborate with the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, a key governmental and strategic partner in the North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports project. As one of Germany’s major port cities, Bremen plays a leading role in driving the maritime hydrogen transition by integrating economic, environmental, and technological strategies at both city and port level.
Driving Maritime Hydrogen Innovation
As a regional authority, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen is spearheading initiatives that position ports as central hubs for green hydrogen and Power-to-X (PtX) fuels such as ammonia and methanol. Through its involvement in the EU-funded North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports project, Bremen is helping to shape a generalised Port Hydrogen Valley Master Plan — a roadmap that will enable European ports to scale up hydrogen production, infrastructure, and trade.
Bremen’s approach combines policy leadership with practical development. It focuses on the transshipment of hydrogen-based energy carriers, as well as on introducing new technologies in port operations and ship design. This dual commitment to innovation and infrastructure underlines Bremen’s role as a frontrunner in climate-smart economic transformation.
About the Ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven
Together, the twin ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven form one of Germany’s largest and most versatile port complexes. They are vital hubs for logistics, offshore wind, automotive shipping, and increasingly, for renewable energy solutions. With strategic access to both North Sea and inland transport networks, the ports are ideally positioned to support and scale hydrogen infrastructure and PtX fuel logistics.
The city’s close collaboration with research institutions like the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) further strengthens its ability to pilot and evaluate new solutions across the hydrogen value chain.
