On January 23, 2025, the first FIER Regional Forum took place in Brake (Germany), bringing together stakeholders from the Wesermarsch region to discuss flood scenarios and related information needs.

Enhancing Flood Preparedness Through Collaboration and Innovation
The partners had a great discussion about various flood hazard maps, including those for heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, and dike breach scenarios. They agreed that there's a need for improved flood hazard maps, particularly for inland flooding. The 2023 Oldenburg winter flood was a perfect example to use as a reference scenario.
The discussion revealed some other exciting opportunities for flood management, like using flood forecasts together with existing data to enhance proactive management. A key point that emerged was the urgent need to sensitize farmers and water management authorities. It was also emphasized that a cross-border approach is vital for planning evacuation routes, ensuring situational awareness, and effectively deploying resources.
The discussions reinforced the importance of preparedness, regional cooperation, and innovative flood risk management strategies. We look forward to further collaboration within the FIER network and beyond!
