Site characterstics:
The Valley of Sainte-Anne includes the Brest Science Park and is located near the sea, in Plouzané and Brest. Our project partner Brest Métropole is responsible for the management of this demonstrator site. The area is a peri-urban zone that requires an integrated ecological assessment both on terrestrial and marine biodiversity due to its coastal location. Habitat types include sandy shore, roads, boat storage area, car park and forest. The main users of this site are employees of research institutes and companies located in the science park, as well as residents and boaters who use the area for sporting and leisure activities.
Light modifications:
Brest Métropole is responsible for the public lighting management in this area. During the light modification (planned for autumn 2024), the road lighting will be adapted including change of lanterns with a warmer colour temperature, dimming (depending on time of night) and partial switch-off. The modifications are part of the Brest Métrople lighting renovation strategy which includes replacement of the present ageing lighting system. DARKER SKY offers inclusion of biodiversity protection as an essential parameter to define innovative lighting solutions.
Environmental impacts of the lighting will be monitored in marine and terrestrial habitat before and after the modifications. Find out more about the ecological monitoring and the process of establishing the monitoring protocols here.
