Smart, Green and Low Emission Lighting at Commercial Wadden Sea Port in Norddeich (DE)
Site characteristics:
Our project partner NPorts manages its demonstrator site in the eastern part of the Commercial Wadden Sea Port of Norddeich. The area consists of an industrial port next to the Wadden Sea including marine benthic habitats and a conservation area of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve inhabited by vulnerable species of birds and salt marsh insects.
Light modifications:
A new demonstration lighting system will be implemented that meets legal requirements, requirements of professional associations to secure work safety, while reducing light emissions and environmental impact as much as possible. The demonstrator will be intelligently and adaptively designed so that it can meet both current legal lighting requirements and changing requirements, e.g. due to possible future lower illuminance levels. The starting point is the lighting planning of Niedersachsen Ports, which will be further developed with a focus on ecological aspects. The demonstrator site will be designed as a “learning system” to draw conclusions for an environmentally friendly and low-light emission in future port projects.
Environmental impacts of the lighting will be monitored in marine and terrestrial habitat before and after the modifications. Find out more about the ecological monitoring and the process of establishing the monitoring protocols here.
