FROM DARKNESS TO THE LIGHT OF THE STARS – Experience "DARKER SKY": The Science and Magic of the Night Sky

As part of the Long Night of Astronomy 2024

Saturday, October 19, 2024, 18 - 23:00, Speicherstadt Hamburg, Am Sandtorkai 27 / 5th and 7th floors
Free entry. Open to all, recommended for ages 12 and up
Organizer: HAW Hamburg, Research and Transfer Center "Digital Reality"

Join us for a special evening and discover the sky above Hamburg – both live and virtually – as part of the nationwide LONG NIGHT OF ASTRONOMY. The event centers around the "DARKER SKY" research project, which focuses on preserving a dark night sky.

Be captivated by inspiring scientific talks and immerse yourself in fascinating hands-on demonstrations. Gain immersive insights into “DARKER SKY” and through simulations, VR and touch tables, understand the importance of a dark night sky for research and society.

The observation terraces of “1000 SATELLITES” on the rooftop offer a unique panoramic view of the Speicherstadt lights and, weather permitting, the opportunity to observe the Moon, Jupiter, constellations – and possibly even the comet "Tsuchinshan-ATLAS" – live over the rooftops of Hamburg, with both the naked eye and telescopes.

Explore “Sky Quality” live with light pollution measurements that you can try out yourself, and hear from researchers about how this can help improve urban lighting and the view of the stars in the future.

Come and experience the magic and significance of the night sky! Free entry.

Featuring lectures, guided sky observations, sky measurements and VR demos by:

  • Prof. Dr. Roland Greule, Professor of Lighting Technology and Virtual Reality at HAW Hamburg, Head of FTZ “Digital Reality”
  • Prof. Dr. Carolin Liedtke, Lighting Engineer and Professor of Lighting Technology at HAW Hamburg, Head of the DARKER SKY project
  • Prof. Thomas W. Kraupe, Astrophysicist, former Director of Hamburg Planetarium, Cultural & Science Advisor
