Last week, the COOL CITIES partnership reunited in Hamburg, where we were warmly hosted by our partners ZEBAU and HafenCity University. Over the course of three inspiring days, our partners from across Northern Europe came together to exchange knowledge, explore innovative practices and strengthen their collaboration in the shared mission to make cities cooler and more resilient to climate change.
Exploring Hamburg's Heat Adaptation Strategies
The monday sessions featured insightful presentations from Hamburg's partners on their approach to heat adaptation. Zamna Castillejos from the Borough of Hamburg-Altona shared the Climate Adaptation Concept of Hamburg-Altona. Also Klara Dahlke from BUKEA shared her insights on "Climate Streets" in Hamburg. A key highlight on Tuesday was the BlueGreenStreets project, which systematically reimagines urban streetscapes. By converting traffic lanes into bike paths and replacing asphalt with greenery, Hamburg demonstrated how thoughtful urban design can cost-effectively enhance green infrastructure while addressing heat stress.
Transnational Learning Session
The meeting also highlighted a Transnational Learning session, where partners delved into shared challenges and thematic priorities. This interactive exchange underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration and collective learning to advance key project goals, such as the development of the Cool Network Plans. Hans van Ammers, reflecting on the interactive session: "This is exactly the kind of exchange we need to accelerate progress and develop stronger strategies together."

Highlights & Next Steps
In addition to the productive discussions, the program also included memorable experiences like a tour of the innovative HafenCity district and a scenic boat trip along the Elbe. These moments not only inspired participants but also strengthened the bonds within the partnership. Moving forward, the focus will remain on refining strategies, fostering deeper connections and hosting more transnational learning opportunities. Our next partner meeting is planned in Sint Niklaas (Belgium) in September.
