To more effectively engage small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the technological industry, the strategy was refined to focus on two key sectors: aerospace and automotive. These industries were chosen due to their high potential for adopting Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies and the growing need for innovative production methods.
A bottom-up approach was implemented to ensure a more impactful engagement. Instead of targeting company directors, who often focus on broader strategic decisions, the initiative aimed directly at engineers—those who work hands-on with production processes and can immediately see the potential of AM. By engaging engineers, the goal was to inspire companies from within, encouraging them to explore and integrate AM into their manufacturing operations. To measure success, the initiative aimed to involve at least five SMEs by presenting them with real-world, proven use cases demonstrating the practical benefits of AM.
On July 9, 2024, a dedicated event was held at CEAD in Delft, where members of the FME AM network—CEAD, Oceanz, and 3D Makers Zone—shared practical case studies showcasing successful applications of AM. These presentations highlighted real-world implementations, demonstrating how AM can optimize production, reduce costs, and enhance design flexibility. In addition to the presentations, attendees participated in a guided tour, offering a firsthand look at cutting-edge 3D printing technologies and innovative solutions in action.
As a result of this targeted approach, 16 companies gained valuable insights into the capabilities of AM, exploring how it could enhance their production processes. The event successfully provided SMEs with concrete examples of AM’s benefits, paving the way for broader adoption of these advanced manufacturing techniques in the aerospace and automotive industries.
