Main content

Samsø is an island in Denmark, located between Jutland and Zealand. It has around 3,700 inhabitants and covers 114 square kilometers. The island is known for its strong agricultural sector and active local communities. It’s a popular holiday destination, with 22 villages, accessible beaches, and a well-developed cycling network.

Energy Transition & Sustainability

Samsø is internationally recognised for its local energy transition. Since 1997, the island has worked towards becoming self-sufficient through renewable energy. Within ten years, it reached this goal, using a mix of onshore and offshore wind turbines, solar panels, and biomass-based heating. Today, Samsø produces more energy than it consumes and is now working towards becoming fully fossil fuel-free by 2030. Key focus areas include electrification of transport and reducing emissions from agriculture.

Community Involvement

Local ownership has been central to Samsø’s energy shift. Many of the wind turbines and heating systems are owned by residents, farmers, or local cooperatives. The Samsø Energy Academy plays a key role by coordinating projects, offering training, and supporting knowledge exchange with other regions. It acts as a meeting point for citizens, businesses, and local government, helping to maintain long-term support for sustainable development.
