FFC2 Key Challenge
The primary challenge this pilot addresses is the establishment of a permanent and sustainable inland waterway (container) transport service between Hamburg (HH) and Bremen/Bremerhaven (HB) to reduce environmental impact and provide a viable alternative to road transport. The main obstacles are long transport times, high costs, and the preference of carriers to operate from Hamburg rather than Bremerhaven.
FFC2’s objectives
- Why?
The purpose of this pilot is to develop a reliable barge transport route between Hamburg and Bremen/Bremerhaven, promoting sustainable freight movement and reducing CO₂ emissions in line with the Greening Containers Proposal. - How?
The approach involves optimizing ports of call by shifting the route to include Hamburg, the Mittelland Canal, Bremen, and Bremerhaven. This strategy aims to enhance operational efficiency, increase container transport, and establish a more predictable service. - Where?
The pilot is implemented along the inland waterway route between Hamburg, the Mittelland Canal, Bremen, and Bremerhaven.
