FFC1: Online Platform to Identify and Evaluate Potential Waterway Freight Flows

Main content

Key challanges

In Sweden, inland and coastal shipping solutions remain under-utilized. Although there are governmental aspirations to increase shipping’s role in the Swedish transport system, the shift toward waterborne transport has been limited. Cargo owners, accustomed to truck logistics, often lack the necessary insight into waterway transport’s feasibility and benefits.

FFC1 objectives

  • Why?

The main goal is to bridge the knowledge gap between cargo owners and shipping companies. By making waterborne solutions more visible and understandable—including quick, indicative pricing and CO₂ estimates—the platform aims to lower barriers and encourage a wider shift to waterway transport.

  • How?

We are developing an online platform that provides rapid guidance on both cost and environmental impact for potential waterway transports. By connecting cargo owners, shipping lines, and port terminals, the platform highlights emission reductions and cost alternatives for specific origins and destinations—making waterway transport a clear, accessible option.

  • Where?

Initially focused on Sweden and Swedish stakeholders, the online platform can be extended to other regions in the future.
