Why Hydrogen
The North Sea Region (NSR) is at the forefront of green energy transformation, offering enormous opportunities for energy security, economic growth, and hydrogen innovation capacity. The global green hydrogen market is projected to reach €591bn by 2030 (Deloitte, 2023), and hydrogen has a particularly crucial role to play in decarbonizing the transport sector.
However, three major challenges persist:
- Small H2 Ecosystems: Most hydrogen ecosystems consist of small, isolated private sector groups that are in early test phases, with little public sector coordination or knowledge exchange.
- Scarcity of Business Models: There is a lack of innovative and viable business models for both single and multi-user hydrogen applications.
- Lack of Public Policies and Transnational Strategies: Without enabling public policies and cohesive cross-border deployment strategies, private actors face significant risks when attempting to scale hydrogen solutions.
H2ignite seeks to address these challenges by:
- Establishing four cross-sector regional hydrogen innovation ecosystems.
- Developing and testing innovative business models for green hydrogen transport value chains (HDVs, vessels).
- Fostering cross-sector dialogue to close the gap between legislators and enterprises.
- Promoting hydrogen policy innovations such as procurement frameworks and incentive schemes to accelerate deployment.
Together, these actions will ensure that the North Sea Region harnesses the full potential of hydrogen to drive a green, sustainable, and resilient transport system.
Project Description
H2ignite is an ambitious Interreg North Sea project designed to unlock the potential of green hydrogen as a key component in the transition to a sustainable transport sector. By establishing four cross-sector hydrogen innovation ecosystems, we aim to accelerate the deployment of green hydrogen in heavy-duty vehicles and vessels, tackle legislative barriers, and create a framework for policy innovation. The project brings together public and private actors across the region, uniting efforts to address infrastructure gaps, enhance cross-border collaboration, and create long-term action plans for hydrogen transport solutions.
