Decarbonizing Logistics: Moving Forward with All Stakeholders Included
Public authorities have been experimenting with solutions to decarbonize logistics and transportation for years. However, the implementation has often remained at the experimental stage, lacking clear frameworks for widespread adoption. A significant consequence of implementing more ambitious and large-scale policies is the potential exclusion of many businesses from urban areas.
This is particularly relevant given the diverse nature of the logistics sector, with a significant portion of stakeholders consisting of SMEs. While parcel delivery vehicles may draw the most attention, the bulk of urban logistics activities revolve around construction, services (such as window washing or plumbing), and general retail. Unlike larger corporations, SMEs often face challenges in adapting to rapidly evolving policies due to limited awareness, knowledge, and financial resources.
In response to these challenges, the GLEAM NSR project will provide targeted solutions to address both the lack of clear frameworks for large-scale implementation and the specific needs of SMEs in navigating the transition to decarbonized transport.
Fostering Just and Green Urban Logistics: Towards Efficient and Equitable Initiatives
GLEAM NSR aims to facilitate the development and implementation of ambitious policies and governance frameworks to support sustainable urban logistics in cities. This initiative is dedicated to ensuring that both larger enterprises and SMEs are equipped to thrive in this environment. The project will create or upscale multi-level, multi-stakeholder collaboration platforms where the inputs of governments, academics, industry actors, and citizens will be used to develop more efficient and equitable policies and actions.
By harnessing the insights and contributions of such a diverse group of stakeholders, the project endeavors to foster an environment conducive tojust and green urban logistics. Achieving this goal demands a collective effort, and the partners involved in the GLEAM NSR project bring a wealth of deep and complementary expertise to the table.
Developing Impactful and Accepted Climate-Neutral Transportation Policies
Over the course of a three-and-a-half-year project spanning from 2023 to 2027, the GLEAM NSR consortium will collaborate intensively to share best practices, enhance existing strategies, and scale-up local initiatives, especially regarding the development of digital platforms.
With a steadfast commitment to fostering just and green logistics, the project’s primary objective will be to ensure that local authorities comprehensively grasp the needs of SMEs and craft climate-neutral transportation policies that are both impactful and widely embraced.
