About the area
What are the flood risks in the area?
The Höljes Dam is the largest dam along the Klarälven River. If water levels rise too high, a dam break could lead to major disruptions, including power outages and damage to infrastructure. The Klarälven experiences regular spring flooding, and with climate change, both the intensity of these floods and annual rainfall are expected to increase.
Where can FIER contribute most to growth in this area?
Karlstad University and Torsby Municipality are working together to identify critical areas for evacuation in case of a dam failure or flooding along the Klarälven. There are limited evacuation routes, and several bridges may become unusable during high water, making it vital to improve planning for safe evacuations across the valley.
