About the area
Flood risks in this area
Dordrecht is an island, surrounded by three major rivers, and therefore deeply connected with water. Together with their partners, they work on protecting the city from climate change challenges. They are committed to greening the city and creating green-blue zones to prevent flooding, drought and heat. Although the chance of a major flood is small, it is a realistic scenario. That’s why they prepare their residents for this possibility by raising awareness of the risks and providing them with action perspective.
Contribution of the FIER project to this area
The FIER project supports them in strengthening communication around water safety, increasing residents’ awareness of water-related risks, and providing them with practical self-reliance tips for flood scenarios. They are also developing an evacuation strategy, with the city districts Maasterras and De Staart serving as safe refuge points. In this way, they are building a resilient and future-proof Island of Dordrecht, prepared for the impacts of climate change.
