Hannover was amazing. Hydrogen was the talk of the town. With companies big and small in size but always with great renewable ambitions.

Spring was in the air, when we visited the regional development conference for Hydrogen in Hannover.  Our project partner, the agency for regional development Leine-Weser, is geographically part of Lower Saxony and has more than 8 million inhabitants. We were introduced to a large number of Hydrogen projects and companies ranging from ENGINIUS, developer of trucks for carbon-neutral transport and Holthausen Clean Technology, to the entrepreneurial farmer Mr. Manfred Becke from Neustadt am Rübenberge who has been investing in new energy since the 1980s.

The conference was designed to connect H2 networks to other H2 networks across the regions, which has the potential to accelerate impacts. Dr. Alexander Bedrunka informed us about the activities of the “Hydrogen Network of Lower Saxony”, which with 900 members is among the larger platforms in this region. Dr. Peter Oswold presented Hydrogen Alliance South Lower Saxony which has 42 members, including universities, and several counties (Landkreis) as well as companies. The ideas of these networks were then matched with  projects and networks from the Netherlands such as HyNorth presented by Mr. Detmar Ypma and the Hydrogen pilot in the Built Environment presented by Mr Kees Boer. These new connections will increase the flow of information and ideas across Europe.

Coming soon will be a more comprehensive reflection on this regional H2 development conference in which we also highlight some of the key learning points.
