The migration season of the Chinese mitten crab has started and this is evident in the waterways in Flanders.
The video and images taken on the Scheldt river near Asper show a number of crabs. The Chinese mitten crab migrates annually to freshwater areas to spawn. This phenomenon attracts much attention, however, the presence of these crabs can also cause problems such as damage to dikes and banks. It is therefore important to keep a close eye on the population and to take measures where necessary to reduce the impact.
