Approximately 60 citizens and experts from local authorities and forestry administration convened at the Kurhaus in Bad Fallingbostel on April 16, 2024, in an event to present BIOZE's results and to explore the future of energy wood supply.
Dr. Kürsten from 3N opened the discussion, presenting the different tools designed in BIOZE, with an emphasis on the woody energy FAQ tools translated in German. He then proceeded to highlight uncertainties surrounding the viability of wood-fired heating systems. While subsidies of up to 70 percent are available, concerns persist regarding wood's renewability and availability. An emphasis was put on the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) negotiations, affirming wood's continued classification as a renewable energy source. Michael Kralemann from the 3N Competence Center then discussed technical advancements in efficient and clean wood energy use, emphasizing wood's significant contribution to Germany's renewable heat supply.
Lena Maack from the Lower Saxony State Forests concluded by presenting data on climate change-related forest decline and its impact on current and future timber supply. The event shed light on the ecological rationale for wood energy use and its crucial role in achieving climate-neutral energy supply.
