Greenmaterial- Demonstration Pavillon (Tiny House)

3N plans to build a Greenmaterial- Demonstration Pavillon (Tiny House) in cooperation with “Holzbau Deutschland -Verband Niedersächsischer Zimmermeister” (VNZ).

The concept envisages a timber construction module that can be used in as many ways as possible, which is intended to present in particular the different types of façades as well as wall structures (visible, various insulation materials made from biobased materials). The pavilion is planned from the beginning in such a way that all fields (façades, insulation,…) in the timber scaffolding are interchangeable.

The pavillon will be transportable and can therefore be used at various locations, to reach a broad audience.

Our aim is to have at least two designers to support the design phase and assist in building our pilot project.

What are the materials that you are investigating to use and why?

We plan to use hemp, miscanthus, cattail, seaweed and straw to show the wide range and possibilities of biobased building materials. Some of the materials we plan to use have already been approved as building material or are common in practice. Others, like cattail as insulation material, are in the trial phase.

What will be the timeline of the pilot?

A tender for the basic wooden framework among the members of the VNZ was sent out. Bids can be submitted until the end of January. This will be followed by coordination talks between 3N, VNZ and the providers. The construction phase follows. Completion of the Greematerial Pavilion is scheduled for September 2025.

What do you want to achieve with the pilot?

This project is intended to help ensure that biobased building is recognized within the surrounding area and beyond. It will also be used to promote timber construction prize of lower saxony (Holzbaupreis Niedersachsen).

With the consent of its own members, the VNZ has already planned a budget for the next few years for the further costs in its own budget. In addition to maintenance and operation, this also includes the costs for insurance and support (such as booking for rental). The potential borrowers are timber construction companies, 3N, ministry of agriculture and other players who present themselves with the topic of timber construction, sustainable insulation materials, etc.
