Leeuwarden, October 25, 2024 – Today, the Fryske Hemp Fiber Deal was proudly signed by over 30 parties, including Frisian housing corporations, construction companies, developers, and local authorities. This agreement marks a milestone in the regional hemp fiber chain, as these parties commit to using Frisian hemp insulation in the coming years. The parties have committed to applying locally-produced hemp fiber insulation in at least 1,000 construction and renovation projects throughout Fryslân.

Regional Hemp Fiber Chain

The Fryske Hemp Fiber Deal signifies the launch of the first complete regional chain for biobased building in the Netherlands. Thanks to this extensive collaboration, locally produced, sustainable materials like Hempwool, produced by GreenInclusive, can now be utilized in construction and renovation projects across Fryslân. This initiative brings together farmers, construction companies, and housing corporations, and propels the transition towards a circular economy.

Collaboration with Frisian Housing Corporations and Construction Companies

Housing corporations and Circulair Friesland members, including Accolade, Elkien, De Bouwvereniging, Thús Wonen, and Wonen NWF, support the use of Frisian hemp fiber insulation in their renovation projects. They have encouraged their construction partners, such as Jorritsma, Lont, Heijmans, Dura Vermeer, Friso Bouwgroep, SW Vastgoedverbetering, and Van der Geest, to adopt hemp fiber as an insulation material. This collective move strongly boosts the Frisian hemp fiber initiative, aiming to equip over 1,000 homes with this Frisian product within the next three years. Previously, GreenInclusive’s locally sourced Hempwool was extensively applied in the new SC Cambuur Kooi Stadium.

With the commitment of these parties to this innovative insulation material, GreenInclusive has the support needed to establish a production facility for biobased insulation materials in Friesland. Frisian municipalities and the province stimulate this demand by choosing biobased materials in their market tenders. Consequently, GreenInclusive can offer the over 110 participating Frisian farmers stable demand for their natural raw materials and guaranteed prices, creating a new and stable market for Friesland’s agricultural sector.

CO2 Savings and Certification

GreenInclusive will record and certify the CO2 savings of over 1,700 tons achieved through the use of biobased materials like Hempwool. The proceeds from these CO2 certificates will directly benefit Frisian farmers, making sustainability an immediate contributor to the regional agricultural economy.

A Unique Collaboration

This deal is a unique step in the Netherlands, turning intentions into visible results. It offers new opportunities for sustainable building, strengthens the regional economy, and supports Friesland’s agricultural domain. To support the successful rollout of hemp fiber insulation, Miedema Bouwmaterialen and Oldenboom Meinesz, in collaboration with Circulair Friesland, are launching a knowledge program. This initiative will guide all parties involved in the use of hemp fiber, showcasing its benefits and fostering the growth and development of the regional biobased economy.
