The Super Smart Charging Hubs Pilots

There is a business opportunity to offer smart solutions combining renewable energy with storage and smart use of energy with minimum impact on the grid. Experiments in NL with so called ‘smart charging hubs’ revealed that these can address the electricity grid challenges. The Super Smart Charging Hubs (SSCH) project will kickstart this business opportunity by proofing the business case and paving the way for upscaling the solution.

A SSCH consists of a combination of proven technology: Renewable energy sources, batteries, Vehicle to Grid (V2G) enabled (shared) EVs, smart bi-directional charging infrastructure, an energy management system for load balancing and a ‘virtual power plant’ (VPP) that solves the business case as it aggregates energy within a portfolio.

As an integral solution the SSCH is not yet proven. Also, across regions, there are differences: regulations to (dis)connect from the grid, tariffication, energy distribution and safety aspects concerning batteries.

We will start 3 Living Labs and support companies to provide solutions for a SSCH and to take away hurdles:

  1. The SSCH in Vlissingen (Netherlands) near the train station and the harbour
  2. SSCH on a location in Flanders (Belgium) on the premises of a social housing company
  3. A climate-smart mobility house SSCH in Malmö (Sweden).
