In the sixth edition of this year’s webinar series "Mobility and Behavior", hosted by Gröna Mobilister, a pressing and often overlooked issue was explored: the vast amount of urban land consumed by parking. Bringing together a diverse panel of experts and moderated by SHARE-North Squared member Michael Johannson from Lund University, the session offered thought-provoking perspectives and innovative solutions to this challenge.
Michael Glotz-Richter shared his experiences from Bremen, where he has been championing car-sharing initiatives to reduce car dependency and reclaim urban space. Leo Schneede, representing the SHARE-North Squared partner “City of Helsingborg”, introduced groundbreaking concepts for reimagining parking lots as sustainable, multi-functional urban spaces that support vibrant city life.
Professor Donald Shoup of UCLA, renowned for his seminal work "The High Cost of Free Parking," delivered a succinct overview of his influential ideas on transforming parking policies to promote urban efficiency and sustainability. Complementing these insights, Adam Greenfield shared his hands-on approach to eliminating mandatory parking requirements in Austin, Texas, offering a compelling case for change at the municipal level.
