Our partners, the Stad Mechelen and Woonmaatschappij Rivierenland - Woonland, have launched a new initiative to make shared mobility accessible to residents in social housing neighborhoods.
Under the SHARE-North Squared initiative, two new shared mobility hubs have opened this week:
📍Gandhiwijk Neighborhood (Local Service Center Den Abeel)
📍Oud Oefenplein Neighborhood (Neighborhood parking at Lijsterstraat)
Residents now have access to:
✔️Electric shared cars
✔️Electric and regular shared bikes
This initiative is part of a collaborative effort to ensure that sustainable mobility options are available to all, regardless of car ownership.
Alderman Alexander Vandersmissen emphasizes the importance: "Shared mobility should be easily accessible for every resident of Mechelen."
The project is designed with the future in mind. It builds on a detailed analysis of the area's mobility needs and aims to foster sustainability and convenience. Woonland Chairman Thijs Verbeurgt highlights the positive social impact: "Residents without private cars now have affordable and eco-friendly mobility options."
With this step, Mechelen is paving the way for sustainable mobility solutions in social housing communities, and the city plans to expand this model to other areas in Flanders.
Together, we're driving toward a greener, more inclusive future!
