Vervoerregio Amsterdam (NL)

We have the objective to pilot a new solution to make public transport more accessible to people with reduced mobility, through mutual assistance of people who need help with people that can provide help (starting with staff, and then with any volunteer passengers). We aim to develop a solution that can facilitate this mutual assistance and connect people together, hence making public transport more user-friendly and accessible to all users.

Pilot in detail:

The pilot idea consists of providing additional information and functionalities for Dutch travel apps

  • Unlocking data: This is about digitizing the public transport space by unlocking information about the assets in an app. Assets such as escalators, lifts, stairs, and equipment of vehicles to know for instance if they are vehicle accessible or functioning at all. The accessibility of this information makes it possible for the traveler to decide whether to make the trip or not. The required data to provide relevant information is available, but shattered between municipalities, at the carriers or the railway operator.

  • Visual display: Besides the data about the assets, travel apps should also be able to give a visual view of the assets, station, platform and surroundings.

The idea is not to develop apps ourselves, but only to provide for the three mentioned functionalities. A first showcase will be the ‘paratransport app’ of the municipality of Amsterdam, which they develop with RMC.
