REMARCO joined visit of State Councillor Dr. Olaf Joachim in Bremerhaven, Germany

On Thursday, 8th of August, 2024 State Councillor Dr. Olaf Joachim, Representative of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen to the Federal Government and for European Affairs, visited Bremerhaven to learn about projects funded by the EU that have significant impact beyond Germany's borders.

Dr. Joachim was specifically interested in the two EU-North Sea Interreg projects North Sea Wrecks and REMARCO. Both projects were presented at the German Maritime Museum. Dr. Sven Bergmann, former project leader of North Sea Wrecks project, provided an overview of the sound results of the project and guided Dr. Joachim through the museum's new permanent exhibition where also the North Sea Wrecks Travel Exhibition, “Legacies of Wars”, is now a central part of.

Dr. Matthias Brenner from the Alfred Wegener Institute, the current REMARCO coordinator provided insights to Dr. Joachim about the objectives, motivations, and the research process of REMARCO. He emphasized how REMARCO is advancing the understanding of munitions-related environmental issues and working to develop effective strategies for their mitigation.

Dr. Olaf Joachim expressed his enthusiasm following the visit, noting how informative and exciting the experience was. He particularly emphasized the effective use of EU funds and the long-term positive and socially relevant impacts these projects are achieving.
