REMARCO at the Arctic Frontiers 2025 in Tromsø
From January 27 to 31, 2025, members of the REMARCO project from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), along with a representative of the Advisory Board, participated in the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromsø. This annual event brings together scientists, policymakers, and industry representatives to discuss current challenges and opportunities in the Arctic.
As part of the "Environmental Impacts of War" session, REMARCO presented its research on the ecological consequences of military conflicts in fragile marine ecosystems. The focus was on the detection of TNT and its derivatives in marine organisms and the biological effects of World War munitions on marine life, such as fish and mussels. Additionally, the REMARCO project was highlighted, emphasizing its critical role in assessing and mitigating the environmental risks of warfare agents in marine ecosystems.
The full-day session featured a total of eight presentations from REMARCO partners, including four live stage presentations, three online contributions from the UKSH and the German Maritime Museum (DSM), and one poster presentation.
Beyond the conference, Bryan Lintott, a REMARCO’s Advisory Board member, organized site visits to the Tirpitz salvage site and facilitated workshops with experts from Arctic communities to foster knowledge exchange and future collaborations.
