REMARCO at High-Level Dialogue on Munition Legacies at Sea in Brussels
On January 17, 2025, REMARCO joined the dialogue event "Munition Legacies at Sea and the European Perspective", hosted at the German Embassy in Brussels. This gathering brought together leading policymakers, scientists, and environmental experts to address the pressing issue of historical munitions dumped in European waters.
A key moment of the evening was an engaging panel discussion, which featured prominent figures from the fields of environmental policy and marine protection. Among the panelists were Tobias Goldschmidt, Minister of the Environment of Schleswig-Holstein, Sebastian Unger, Federal Government Commissioner for the Ocean, Dr. Rüdiger Strempel, Executive Secretary of HELCOM, Tobias Troll, Marine Policy Director at Seas At Risk, and Christos Economou, Deputy Director for Maritime Policy and Blue Economy (DG Mare).
During the discussion, experts examined the history of underwater munitions dumping, shared the latest scientific findings on contamination and ecological consequences, and explored strategies for effective remediation. The dialogue underscored the critical need for international cooperation to mitigate the environmental risks posed by these hazardous remnants of war and to develop sustainable solutions for their removal.
REMARCO remains deeply committed to advancing scientific research, fostering policy engagement, and contributing to practical remediation efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems. The event in Brussels highlighted the importance of continued collaboration at the European level to tackle this complex challenge.
As we move forward, REMARCO will continue its mission to assess and mitigate the risks associated with underwater munitions, ensuring a safer and healthier marine environment for future generations.
