The pilot project of Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts) concentrates on the possibilities of generating and storing renewable energies in the port. The focus is on small-scale solutions and the testing of selected systems in the seaport of Emden. The pilot project is structured as follows:

  1. Study: NPorts is plannig to carry out a research study on the generation of renewable energy in a port environment. All potential options are to be examined and evaluated. The evaluation is carried out with regard to economic viability and feasibility
  2. Test field: The second part of the pilot project focuses on testing different small-scale options for generation and storage of renewable energy in the port. Three different innovative options are to be tested and monitored in the Port of Emden. The aim is to investigate the functionality and cost-effectiveness in a typical port environment (salty air, fog, etc.) in long-term tests. The following three test fields are being implemented by Niedersachsen Ports:

  • Micro wind turbines (test field 1): Micro wind turbines of different technologies are to be installed and tested at several locations in the port of Emden. They will be mounted on buildings as well as on light poles.
  • Containerized wind turbine (test field 2): A compact containerized wind turbine is to be installed and tested at a location in the port of Emden. In addition to wind turbines, the system also consists of solar panels and an integrated storage unit with a wallbox for charging electric vehicles.
  • Battery storage (test field 3): In order to optimize the existing PV system and the charging of e-vehicles and to collect experiences in the management of battery storage, it is planned to install a storage unit in the port. The special thing about it is that it consists of recycled batteries from e-vehicles and thus supports the circular economy in a meaningful way.

NPorts is involving interested port communities in its project and sharing its experience with port customers. Workshops communication activities and guided tours are planned for this purpose.
