Current Situation
Mobility is one of the focus points of the current legislative period. In the last years, the city has attracted more inhabitants, entrepreneurs, employers, visitors & tourists, implying a lot more traffic and transport flows. Mechelen has an historic center with a busy shopping center and a car-free pedestrian shopping triangle, but at the same time Mechelen wants to remain accessible.
To find a good balance between livability and accessibility, the city is committed to sustainable mobility, among other things. It wants to realise a modal shift in which people choose more sustainable modes of mobility, such as shared mobility, active mobility and public transport. Multi-modality is an important key to achieving this shift. It is also about achieving a mental shift and getting people to change their mobility habits. To help realise this, it is important to provide the necessary infrastructure and mobility options.

Key Challenge
- How can we make mobility hubs & urban logistics solutions more attractive & increase their usage?
- Mechelen is already implementing “Hoppin-points” (mobility hubs) serving as backbone for the transition to sustainable urban mobility.
- Also, Mechelen actively invests into sustainable urban logistics & established a dense network of pick-up locations for emission-free deliveries.
Possible Solutions
In MoLo Hubs, Mechelen wants to combine those strengths by applying an integrated approach of strategically thinking urban logistics & mobility hubs together to increase attractiveness & use of both.
