On March 1st the City of Mechelen announced the first locations of the Hoppinpunten. Hoppinpunten are hubs where many modes of transport converge. Travellers can easily ‘hop’ from their bike to the train, bus, shared car or vice versa. With this initiative Flanders wants to promote efficient, sustainable, flexible and accessible transport.
The first Hoppinpunt in Mechelen will be opened in June ’24 and will be Keerdok, a parking at the edge of the city where there are already a lot of different mobility options.
Hoppinpunten are being rolled out all over Flanders. You can recognize these hubs by the noticeable purple and white Hoppin column. By using this concept, Flandres wants to make the mobility transition visible and recognizable in the public space for users and encourage residents to opt for sustainable modes of transport.
In MoLo Hubs the City of Mechelen will combine these Hoppinpunten with logistics hubs by adding parcel boxes near the hub. By doing so, they want to make logistics in their city more sustainable and also enrich the use of the Hopppinpunten.
Locations
The rollout of the Hoppinpunten will happen in several phases. In 2024, the city of Mechelen will realize 7 Hoppinpunten. They are focussing on the smaller train stations and the neighbourhoods and villages first. Residents on the outskirts of the city often still rely on private transportation. By implementing Hoppinpunten in these locations, residents are more stimulated to use sustainable modes of transportation. Moreover, there are already a lot of mobility options at these locations, making it easy to realize a Hoppinpunt.
The locations that will be realised in 2024 are:
- Keerdok (local hub)
- Station Muizen (local hub)
- Frans Halsvest (neighbourhood hub)
- Den Abeel (neighbourhood hub)
- De Plaon (neighbourhood hub)
- Dageraadstraat (neighbourhood hub)
- Arsenaal (neighbourhood hub)
