The BITS project marked a significant step towards a better cycling future by combining the green and digital transitions through cycling. It was the first initiative in Europe to showcase the potential of smart cycling applications, integrating cycling with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Through over 30 innovative pilot projects, BITS improved cycling safety, speed, comfort, and convenience across the North Sea Region. These schemes helped make cycling a more attractive and efficient mode of transportation, aligning with broader environmental and digitalization goals.
The project's lasting legacy includes the MegaBITS project and the BITS Directory, which highlights a range of smart cycling services. BITS successfully demonstrated how technology can enhance sustainable urban mobility, setting a precedent for future developments in smart transport solutions.
