Floating Bike Data (FBD) can offer valuable insights into cycling patterns, traffic flow and traffic safety, yet it remains underutilized by policymakers today. This was highlighted in the Mobilizing Europe's Green Ambitions through Bicycles and Intelligent Transport Systems (MegaBITS) project meetings, where several regions and cities showed interest in using FBD but had many questions about its implementation. Now, imec has launched a report that maps the current landscape, challenges, and recommendations for Floating Bike Data.

The underuse of floating bike data can be attributed to several factors, including data inconsistency. Different smartphone applications and hardware devices collect data in various formats, making it challenging to aggregate and analyse data uniformly across systems, let alone across cities. Furthermore, the lack of a uniform and standardised data format hinders seamless integration and transferable solutions, limiting cities and organisations' ability to conduct comprehensive analyses or learn from each other.

To further understand the challenges and opportunities in growing Floating Bicycle Data, MegaBITS project partner, imec, conducted comprehensive interviews with experts from various domains, including industry, standardisation bodies and data providers. The paper Recommendations on a Specification for Floating Bicycle Data draws on these interviews and imec's research to map the current landscape of Floating Bike Data: its applications, the challenges that hinder its broader adoption and offering recommendations and next steps to further its growth.
