Cycling data: a resource for cyclists’ safety and cycling advocacy

MegaBITS’ project partner, Cycling Industries Europe (CIE), and its member, Luna Systems, were recently featured in Zag Daily, where they discussed the importance of cycling data for cyclist safety and advocacy. At MegaBITS, we are delighted to see the attention given to cycling data and its role in enhancing cycling safety, aligning with our goal to deploy ITS technologies that improve rider safety, comfort, and convenience in the North Sea Region.

In the interview, Luna Systems’ CEO, Andrew Fleury, focused on three key areas where technology and data can work together to improve cycling in Europe:


•    Supporting individual cyclists
•    Improving rider habits
•    Enhancing city infrastructure


The Irish company develops smart technology to acquire data that upholds the safety of cyclists, using technologies such as vehicle proximity detection to provide the cyclist with visual and audio when nearby vehicles get too close, helping them to maneuver to safety.

Cycling data not only improves road users’ safety but is also an important tool for cycling advocacy at the institutional level, added CIE’s Project Manager Samuel Pierce: “If we can get granular data on cycling, then we can inform policy and make the case that cycling also needs European support and investment if its full potential is to be realised.”

Uniform data collection across Europe is also part of the European Declaration on Cycling asks and would allow to demonstrate the growth of cycling and recognising it as a strategic priority.
