Natuurmonumenten Schiermonnikoog is participating in Interreg project FREIIA. In close cooperation with the municipality of Schiermonnikoog, we ensure that the project helps the island to get one step closer to a circular economy.
One of the components is an assignment to students of the Hanze Hogeschool Groningen. They were asked to design a sustainable, circular and locally produced souvenir. The materials used came from residual streams such as pruning waste, dredging sludge, jute plastic and bicycle tires from the local bicycle rental. This is the result of the first group of students.
The lighthouse is one of the best running products at information center Het Baken. These are ordered from a wholesaler that imports lighthouses from a country far away. The students have made a sustainable version from pruning waste.
These are the first steps toward a more sustainable, circular and local assortment. Not only in Het Baken but also in other stores on the island This is the result of the first group of students. A new group starting in February will further develop the products and the production process.
The students researched materials, sales opportunities and production possibilities. They made sample products and a guide to pass on to possible producers.
