The Climate City Office - Klimastadtburo - is the department responsible for municipal climate change issues in the City of Bremerhaven's Environmental Protection Agency. Klimastadtburo is committed to a climate-friendly city and to ensuring that the problem of climate change is taken into account as a matter of course in personal, business and official decisions.
Market place for circular building
Bremerhaven's municipal climate plan is ambitious and underlines the importance of the transition to a circular economy. As a major German sea harbour, Bremerhaven is already the site for storing, trading and distributing building materials. The city hopes to build on this experience and develop a new fuction as a market place for circular building materials.
Also, this partner wants to use its experience of innovative practices with communities and with overcoming regulatory and financial challenges, to increase their impact and involve neighbouring municipalities (across the Bremen – Niedersachsenborder).
City office for climate change
During her introduction to the CTB project , Sustainability Officer Jennifer Ottinger told partners: "We take the lead within the city administration for all climate-related matters." We are handling various climate protection projects, climate adaptation and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen's climate protection strategy." The overarching goal of this strategy is to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2038. To this end, there is a strong sense of urgency, with a number of high priorities being identified:
- Heat transition and municipal heat planning
- Improvement of low-CO2 mobility options
- Energy-efficient refurbishment of the public building standard
- Climate-neutral transformation of the economy
"We are working closely with municipal stakeholders and civil organizations to implement the climate protection strategy. The city council has entrusted us with the lead role in municipal heat planning and the initiation of the heat transition in Bremerhaven.
Renovation & circular building
Circular building is fairly new to the Klimaatstadt office. However, this German partner is very familiar with the problem of renovating old buildings thanks to numerous neighborhood projects. Bremerhaven wants to fill some gaps by sharing ideas, learning, improving and developing missing elements with the other partners. They have extensive experience working with other European partners in various programmes. "For example, as a partner in Stronghouse, a project in the previous Interreg NSR Programme, we faced the challenges of sustainable energy renovation in old buildings in the Klimameil district," Till Scherzinger, Head of Department explains.
The City wants to find new ways to stimulate and enable circular building and the re-use of building materials.
