With funding from the European Union through the COPPER initiative, the City of Bremen is working with carsharing provider Cambio Bremen to enhance grid-friendly E-Carsharing to prepare for city-wide E-Carsharing.

Challenge

Bremen aims to be a leader in Europe for the green transition, and a key part of this strategy is mobility. As part of their shared mobility strategy, Bremen is aiming to increase the percentage of electrified shared vehicles available to its residents, reducing the need for private car ownership while reducing air pollution and emissions.

The switch from Carsharing to E-Carsharing can impact mobility patterns and stress on the local grid in new, unpredictable ways. Before scaling electric mobility to the city, Bremen needs a comprehensive understanding of how daily use and charging of electric vehicles will the impact on the local electricity grid.

Approach

Bremen and cambio’s pilot aims to monitor the impact of E-Carsharing on the electricity grid, initially with a fleet of 20 EVs used across 50+ public car-sharing stations.

The pilot will allow cambio to enhance its carsharing software to improve the efficiency of E-Carsharing, supporting Bremen's sustainability goals and promoting E-Carsharing incentives.

In collaboration with the local DSO Wesernetz, Bremen will develop a local energy action plan (LEAP) to explore how an E-Carsharing fleet can be managed to benefit the local grid.

Objectives

Create a Local Energy Plan for shared electric mobility

By installing and monitoring the impact of electric mobility infrastructure on the energy system and mobility patterns, Bremen will develop a Local Energy Plan that integrates shared mobility.

Become a European role model for electric mobility

Bremen seeks to share their experiences through COPPER's network of 2,000+ city partners, showing how shared electric mobility can limit congestion both on roads and on the grid.

Guide and strengthen electric car sharing plans for the city

Working closely with car-sharing operator cambio Bremen, Bremen’s pilot will advance their strategy for shared EVs.

Bremen's Perspective

"Carsharing plays a pivotal role in the green and fair transformation of mobility in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Putting the 'E' into Carsharing is another step into the future! Monitoring its effects on local grid stability and usage patterns is of paramount importance for us."
