On March 5th and 6th, the AIVP working group River Port Cities, held its second workshop in the city of Seville (Spain), along with AIVP member the port of Seville. It was led by Noémi Mené, the AIVP referent for Connected River.

During two days, the participants of the working group discovered the specific case of the Port of Seville, its successes, upcoming projects and challenges. The goal of this workshop and of this group is to bring together members of the AIVP network that are located on River Port Cities or working with them. It aims to offer a dedicated space to share best practices and support to overcome specific challenges. For the 2025 edition of the workshop, representatives from a dozen organizations, from 5 different countries got together in the Andalusian port.

It was a great moment to learn about the different projects from the port of Seville, active in a major urban renewal project called the Urban Port District.

The participants of the group had the opportunity to visit the site before the construction works begins.

Discussions took place on many different topics like port city interface in river cities, circular economy but also on Connected River’s main topic: the safe and shared use of the waterways. The port of Seville is particularly interested in the topic, given that it oversees the management of all the waterway, the Guadalquivir, from Seville to the sea. It is approximately 90km of waterway in total. On this river, leisure boating, rowing, cruises and sea vessels are navigating.

Benno Bultink, project leader of Connected River, had the opportunity to present the project to the group members and to explain in details its methodology and how it could support the working group’s activities.

The participation of CR project partners to the working group is a good way of disseminating Connected River’s experimentations and methodologies to a broader audience and to connect with outside partners that could want to continue its work.

Two online webinars will follow in 2025 and another in-person workshop will take place in 2026, where the Connected River project will also be invited to participate.
