You can have brilliant ideas , but if you can’t get them across, your ideas will not get you anywhere
How to pitch your business idea
The three aims of the orator, according to Cicero, are "docere, delectare, et movere." That is: to prove your thesis to the audience, to delight the audience, and to emotionally move the audience
An aim as old as time - to sell your product
We pitch all the time
- When you convince someone to go and grab a coffee
- When you apply for a job
- When you want to go to on a trip with a partner or a friend
- When you go on a date
How do we build our pitch?
The Hook
Capture the recipients attention. The Hook is a short, first introduction. It can be done by asking a rhetorical question, an assumption or tell an anecdote.
Something that will catch the listener and will make them want to hear more.
Problem/need–
Remember to start from the recipients point of view
Offer/Idea/Solution
This should come logical from the problem….
Benefits
What value does your solution create for the company?
What benefits and profits does your solution create?
Try to quantify the benefits through your solution.
Alternative/other possible solutions
What does your solution compete with? What other ways are there for your recipient to solve their problem or needs?
The Close
Create a possibility for action, what do you want the recipient to do now? Book a new meeting? Browse your website? Try your solution during a certain period?
Put all the parts together and practice!
When you have completed each section of the pitch put everything together.
Then read aloud to each other and watch the time to see how long it takes. If it takes too long, try to remove things that are unimportant or unnecessary or that are repetitive or add nothing.
Kill your darlings!
Practice
Practice makes perfect. Remember, how you say it is as important as what you say. If you don't practice, the risk is that you speak too fast, that it sounds unnatural, or that you forget important parts of your pitch.
Set a goal that you will practice your pitch frequently. The more you practice, the more natural your pitch will sound.
