In Bremen, the Geological Survey of Bremen (GDfB) gave a summer school at the University of Bremen - Pilot GE 1 of the BlueTransition project from 17.02 to 21.02.2025. Together with students from Bremen and neighboring Lower Saxony, scientific and socio-economic aspects of climate change in urban coastal areas were discussed.

In addition to a lot of theoretical knowledge, Mrs. Schimmel from the Bremerhaven Society for Investment and Urban Development (Hashtag#BIS) gave us an insight into the progress of the development of a new climate-neutral commercial area on the #Luneplate in Bremerhaven where she leads the project acitivities. Nature and bird protection zones are located close to agricultural areas near the Weser River there.

The students from Oldenburg and Bremen are creating their own groundwater flow model on the Luneplate using the #FREEWAT tool (modflow based), which is being carried out on the QGIS (open source) interface. As a small GE 1 project, similar to the BlueTransition Pilot GE 1, the groundwater flow is to build and the effect of infiltration wells on the penetration of saltwater on the Luneplate from the Weser River into the aquifer as a result of rising sea levels is to be simulated. Correctly placed, such wells could counteract the possible progress of the freshwater-saltwater boundary from the Weser River into the aquifer towards the inland.
