On the 3rd of July, the (outgoing) Dutch Minister for Agriculture Piet Adema gave the official start sign for an innovation event at the test farm in Drenthe’s former peat district, the Veenkoloniën. This high-profile visit was the perfect opportunity for Blue Transition partners to engage with multiple stakeholders from all levels, which is a priority. The Waterboard Hunze en Aa’s presented the project and the NL3 pilot to all interested parties during this inspiring 3-day happening.

Stakeholder engagement is a high priority for Drenthe’s partners. Francine Engelsman is tasked with the NL3 pilot implementation. “In Blue Transition, we’re actively searching for cooperation with all parties in the area to co-design robust solutions for the effects of climate change,”  she says.

Former peat district

The Veenkoloniën is a former peat district, now mainly in agricultural use. Some peat has remained, but surface levels sink irregularly due to oxidation, making the conditions extra difficult for farmers. The challenge in this area is the availability of water during dry periods and the influence of farming on the water quality. Biodiversity is also at risk.

Balancing resources, stimulating biodiversity

“In Blue Transition, the NL3 pilot takes a more future-proof approach,” Francine continues. “Sustainable farming, a more balanced use of existing resources and the stimulation of biodiversity form the basis for a move towards a climate adaptive and resilient landscape in the Veenkoloniën. We aim to keep farmers motivated by enticing them with relevant knowledge and measures of interest to them – connecting to the agricultural problems related to water shortage in the region. Current strict policies in the sector also play a role in the water board’s approach to finding future opportunities for farmers in the area. We’re wary of a ‘field trial overkill’ and are looking closely for connections with other initiatives with a view to smart  combinations.”

Monitoring blueprint

A monitoring system – called “Bedrijfsbodem-waterplan” (Farm-Soil-Water-Blueprint) – will be used by farmers and soil coaches to determine the measures most needed. This system can also be used for governance. The contribution of ‘Innovatie Veenkoloniën’ offers an opportunity to create a strong collaboration with landowners, research institutes, students and agribusinesses.
