Main content
Leeuwarden, (The Netherlands), aims to transform the Spoordok area into a cycling and pedestrian-friendly space. The city takes an integrated land-use approach, focusing on new mobility designs along housing and office space projects to ensure a vibrant environment that promotes active mobility.
Objectives
- Achieve an urban redesign that encourages active mobility while considering the interests of multiple stakeholders
- Engage temporary residents, including Ukrainian refugees, with active mobility
- Ensure a good multimodal connection between the city’s active mobility ambitions and the train passengers
Physical Intervention
The intervention involves two components: relocating Ukrainian refugees and other temporary residents to Spoordok and closing Snekertrekweg for car traffic, creating a waterside boulevard for leisure and recreation.
Soft Intervention
To encourage active mobility in groups less familiar with it, such as refugees and foreign students, the initiative will conduct awareness campaigns and citizen engagement programs.
