Reimagining Streets for Active School Mobility in Hamburg
The district of Eimsbüttel in Hamburg (Germany), aims to address urban spatial challenges and promote sustainable mobility in and around its schools. The project seeks to transform car-centric streets around schools into spaces prioritising cyclists, pedestrians, and communal activities, while improving safety and fostering active mobility habits. This aims to decrease the amount of car school commutes, through inclusive and participatory processes.
Objectives
- Reconfigure exemplary school streets to encourage active mobility for school commutes (Primary School Rellinger Straße)
- Increase active mobility awareness and attractiveness among school children, parents, staff, and the neighbourhood
- Use schools as the centre for further active mobility urban transformations in the city
Physical Intervention
The project will implement tactical and physical measures to redesign streets surrounding schools, such as the Primary School at Rellinger Straße (A) and the School Cluster Eimsbüttel (B). It will improve cycling facilities and parking in these areas to support active mobility.
Soft Intervention
The initiative will actively involve school communities in the redesign process, using participatory approaches to engage children, parents, and staff. Behaviour measures will be implemented to discourage car usage (Parent-taxis) and encourage cycling and walking for school commutes.
