The city of Mechelen (Belgium) has initiated an urban mobility initiative focusing on cyclists. The project involves piloting the use and success of cycling hubs at busy locations across the city to enhance the cycling experience and promote more sustainable transportation options, while responding to the high workload of bicycle repair workshops.

Objectives

  • Implement their sustainable mobility pillar strategy
  • Increase the share of cycling mobility within the city
  • Measure the value and appreciation of the mobility bicycle repair hubs among its users

Physical Intervention

The project will develop and install eight demand-driven bicycle hubs offering facilities like self-repair stations, bike parking, e-bike charging, and lockers. The hubs are strategically located to integrate with existing cycling infrastructure while avoiding obstruction to public spaces.

Soft Intervention

Behaviour measures will be implemented to encourage more people to switch to cycling, though specific strategies are yet to be determined. The project will also actively promote the existence of the bicycle hubs to both existing and new users.
