As we gear up for World Bicycle Day on June 3rd, we at Active Cities are excited to announce a unique way to celebrate this important day. We have curated a special playlist to accompany you on your cycling journeys, whether you're commuting to work, exploring your local trails, or simply enjoying a leisurely ride.
Our playlist, titled "World Bicycle Day 2023", features 16 songs that perfectly encapsulate the joy of cycling. From the classic "À bicyclette" by Yves Montand, to the energetic "Bicycle Race" by Queen, to the soothing "Nine Million Bicycles" by Katie Melua, and the vibrant "La Bicicleta" by Carlos Vives and Shakira, there's a track for every mood and every ride. We've even included "Von Hamburg bis zum Meer" by Nico Suave for our German-speaking cyclists. You can access the playlist on Spotify here.
World Bicycle Day, recognized by the United Nations, celebrates the bicycle as a "simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation." Regular physical activity, such as cycling, has significant benefits for health, and safe infrastructure for walking and cycling can contribute to greater health equity. The bicycle contributes to cleaner air, less congestion, and makes education, health care, and other social services more accessible to vulnerable populations. It is a critical part of the solution for helping cities reduce emissions, improve air quality, and enhance road safety.
At Active Cities, we are committed to increasing the share of active mobility (walking, cycling) in North Sea Region Cities. We aim to create stimulating, liveable, and human-scale streets with zero-carbon multimodality. Through tactical urbanism, multimodal mobility hubs, awareness campaigns, and co-creation schemes, we are redesigning cities and policies to encourage active mobility and reduce the negative impacts of car-centric urban planning.
As we celebrate World Bicycle Day, we invite you to join us in promoting sustainable development, strengthening education, promoting health, and fostering a culture of peace. So, hop on your bicycle, tune into our playlist, and let's pedal our way towards a healthier, more sustainable future.
Happy cycling!
